As a postpartum RN at Swedish—I see all of the emotions moms and dads wear on their sleep-deprived faces almost daily. Now that I'm 22 weeks pregnant, your article brings all of those fears and frustrations of "what are you feeding MY baby?" A little closer to home. Thanks for sharing your journey.

Jess,

Your writing is amazing. My daughter also spent a month in the NICU, due to a blockage in her duodenum. She couldn't eat for three weeks after her surgery. I pumped as well, I had to throw away the food in my freezer, to store all of her milk. It's so nice to know that I'm not the only one to have felt like a milked cow :)

Congratulations on your son he's adorable, I hope to read more of your posts.

As a mother who went through the Nipple Nazis and the eye rolling with my first, I can feel your pain and frustration. I am so happy that you spoke up for yourself and your son. It is all uphill from now on...be proactive as THEY will always tell you they know better. Don't believe them for a second! Double congratulations for getting your son to breastfeed after the bottle! I know what that is like too! May you both have a wonderful life together!

Jess, if this was Chapter One I'd read through the following 250 anticipating another as good. From one writer to another—marvelous!

Your baby Graham is cute as a piggie's tail, and he's gonna grow up big 'n strong because your bonding and protective love, right now, has infused in him something very special. May your family thrive through the times and may the times be memorably wonderful.

Cheers!

Don: Goodness me, I hope I'm done by the time Graham can ask for it.

Petal: I will *so* be calling him Dumpling from now on.

Greg: Screw the baby. Your yogurt recipe sounds like something I want to eat myself.

And thanks again, all for your kind words!

Oh Jess, I recently went through something similar, just wish I could be as eloquent as you about it. My Alexander was born at just under 32 weeks and spent over 6 weeks in NICU. I breastfed his older sister (who has hardly ever been sick!) for 15 months though and was determined to do my best by him. So I dutifully pumped and insisted on breastmilk only (though he did have a week or two of HMF also). When he got home, I worked hard to get him on the breast. I succeeded and he had only mother's milk till about a month ago (8+ months old) when he weaned himself off (much to my chagrin). Still, he's done well with lovely multiple chins, fat bracelets and thick little edible feet. In fact I have a nibble most days ;-). We are now on the solid food journey which is at turns exciting and frustrating, but all as it should be.

My wife is a former La Leche leader and a breast milk—well, fanatic is perhaps too much but fan is far too mild. Her two youngest were fed until nearly three and, now that they are grown, their own children have been breast fed, too. Personally, my feeling is that when the child can ask for the breast (or nay-nay as young Violet calls it) in full sentences perhaps one should consider weaning. However, in your case, I think you've earned a dispensation, and I am sure that when Graham is in college, a couple of milk shakes (in a cup to be sure) will be much appreciated.

Congratulations. I never thought that I would consider a piece that equated breast feeding with fattening veal calfs and fois gras geese, but well done.
