The elephant in the room with gas grills is assembly. Yes, you can pay extra for an assembled grill at a big box store, but I've tried that in the past with very disappointing results....incorrect assembly, dangerous leaks, etc. I was prepared for a tedious project, brushing up on all my curse words and a full box of band aids in hand I dove in. The good news is that the parts are well organized. Fasteners and special small parts are packed in letter coded bags in order of assembly. The assembly instructions are mostly clear and logical. Key items like the gas line and burners are pre-assembled and tested. The bad news is that the instructions are all in pictures, no words, and in a few places it is not obvious what goes where. Complete assembly took me about 2 1/2 hours.
As can be expected when shipping something this large, that weighs about 120lbs, my grill sustained some superficial damage in shipping. Two of the cabinet sides had ends that were bent, which was no problem to correct with pliers and a towel to protect the finish. The base cabinet door however was badly creased on the hinge side, enough to distort the shape and fit of the door in place. The owner's manual instructs to contact Weber.com, not the seller. I went on-line, clicked on "Parts/Support" and found an 800 number staffed 7 am to 10 pm daily. I called and and a rep actually answered after two rings. Explained my problem, and the rep responded saying no problem, I wouldn't want that either, I will have new door shipped out to you a asap. Two days later, I received the new door which took less than 5 mins to install. The replacement door even came with its own assembly instructions. That in my experience, is exceptional customer service. Yes, that has a cost, and no doubt is part of the reason you pay $400 for a mid-size grill. Overall I find the Spirit 210 to be a very good value.
Preheating this grill seemed pretty efficient, getting up to 500 degrees within about 8 mins. It seers steak, burgers and chicken well and seems to evenly distribute the heat across the entire cooking surface, unlike other grills i've used in the past. The folding side trays of stainless steel are surprising sturdy when in their upright position. Frankly, I was worried about that after being less than sure when inspecting a floor model at Home Depot. (maybe due to WHO put it together) Mine is rock solid when properly raised. No worries about heavy plates of meat, etc on those now. The locking wheels are easy to engage/disengage and do a good job of stabilizing the grill when you're using it. I've cleaned it a few times (yes, I'm THAT guy) and as expected...that is a bit of a chore...but it's pretty simple to remove the grates, flavor bars/heat shields, drip pan to get to the grease to clean up. Cleaning up grease though...regardless...is just not super easy.
I like the size of this grill and the very small profile it has with the shelves down and stored with my Weber cover on. I am usually only cooking for 4-5 people so the grilling surface is just right. Be aware though....if you plan on using your grill often for larger groups, parties, etc...you may want to jump up to a larger unit. I would prefer this grill come with a completely rounded stainless handle like some of the other weber's...versus this gray plastic handle...but that's more about what my eye and hand find pleasing, rather than the actual functionality of it. After all, it DOES work just fine...I just don't love the look and feel of it. The lid and cook box appear to be sufficiently sturdy...hopefully enough so to last several years, but that said...certainly not to the level that the Genesis line is that Weber offers. All in all...I'm happy with this grill and assuming it holds together, and burners, etc stay working....I would certainly recommend it.
Top reviews from other countries
With its fold down sides it takes up a modest footprint in my small back yard and yet has sufficient grilling area to cook for eight or more with ease. It ignites with no hiccups and heats to 500F in less than 10 minutes. This burns off most of the debris from the previous use. Once I've taken my stainless steel bristle to it, I put on a heat-proof mitt and wipe down the grids with a paper towel soaked with a bit of cooking oil. I find this makes the grids effectively non-stick.
I've used it for various methods -- direct heat, indirect heat and as an alternative to a conventional oven and it has performed well in each scenario. I do find it helps to use a hard bristle tooth brush to clean the holes in the burners carefully and periodically. Depending on the kind of grilling I've been doing, I lift out the grids etc. so I can clean the sides and bottom with a plastic scraper. Too much fatty, sugary (BBQ sauce) build-up and the thing will flare alarmingly!
This is my first Weber and of the previous grills I've owned it is far and away the easiest to assemble. It really helps to read the instructions first! In all it took me just over an hour.
The built-in weigh-scale for the propane tank is very useful and pretty accurate. Besides, it's always prudent to keep a full tank on standby as a precaution.
I also bought the custom Weber cover for this grill and am hoping it will extend its life by reducing rust. We'll see in a few year's time.
Really like the foldable side tables as well, very convenient to not have a bbq footprint dominate a space if you need it out of the way. No problem with the size, it handles a lot of food. So far so good after a month or so, we will see after a few winters how it is holding up.
The size was exactly the same as my last bbq which had three burners (from bbq tech a cheap Walmart brand).
I think what makes this bbq cook so well is the distance from the burners to the grilling surface. But nothing gets burnt and everything is cooked perfectly. The main reason for buying this brand (Webber) is both the reviews from people I know that personally own one and the fact that you can still buy replacement parts for bbqs that are over 15 years old...
I have only used it 4 times since I purchased it but so far I can’t say enough good things about it!!!
